The initial attraction of travel insurance provided by Sainsbury’s seems to be the household name and a 10% online discount as well as Nectar points. The travel insurance area of the Sainsbury’s website is well laid out and very self-explanatory and very few details are required to find a quote.

There are certainly lots of options, including extended trip for backpackers although this is limited to travellers between 16 and 40. However, it does seem strange that there are two travel insurance policies offered for Europe – one that includes Spain and one that does not. With Spain being the most popular destination in Europe for British holidaymakers and a member of the EU, it seems strange to make such a distinction.

It is also worth noting that Sainsbury’s charge an additional premium for what they call “independent travellers”. This term refers to travellers who do not buy a simple off the shelf package holiday, but prefer to organise their own travel and accommodation. This may deter some passengers but the cost of this additional premium is fairly low and the overall cost of Sainbury’s insurance policies is very reasonable.
