Saga insurance will not pay out if you are involved in a claim, I know as I have just tried to claim for expenses incured over the ash cloud debacle when I was delayed for 7 days, SAGA will not pay any compensation so whats the point in paying for their insurance cover at all?

I spoke this weekend to a friend who recently returned from a cruise operated by the over 50s specialist SAGA. As well as having been very impressed by the cruise she was also pleased with the company’s travel insurance product].

Both she and her husband have pre-existing medical conditions and having looked at various other options on the internet she recognised that cover could be expensive. Since they were going on a SAGA holiday they were automatically given information on SAGA insurance and she decided to have a look online. She filled in the “Get a Quote” form which was quick and easy to do and was delighted to find that the quote was less than £150 for an annual policy for both of them, for worldwide cover including America. This was cheaper than a quote which she had obtained from Marks and Spencer, which itself was over £200 less than quotes from other specialists in the pre-existing medical conditions market.

She was impressed that for an additional amount she and her husband could also be covered for winter sports and even scuba diving. With the increased risk of injury to older people’s bones through ski-ing accidents some insurance companies are loathe to offer cover for winter sports.

The only downside seemed to be that the maximum days covered on any one trip for destinations including Canada, America and the Caribbean was 45. Other destinations could be topped up to 60 or 90 days for an extra premium. With a young grandson living nearby my friends are unlikely to go off on an extended trip this year but do not rule it out in the future which could make the Saga cover unsuitable for them.

Happily all went well on the cruise so they were unable to say how good the policy would have been in practice.
