I have just had a big shock, I was just about to get my usual travel insurance, what a shame.

I am very sad to see that options have stopped trading. I have always used them and found them terrific.

In 1999, fears that the world’s technology was headed for meltdown because of the so-called Millennium Bug meant that many insurers were unwilling to provide travel cover over the New Year period. Options was one of the few that I found able to cover us for a family holiday and this was how I first came across them.

Their annual policy was good value for a family of four who liked to travel. Our teenage children were covered by the policy even when travelling without the rest of the family, we could opt in and out of winter sports cover as we wished and we could alter, year by year, which parts of the world we needed cover for.

Gradually their premiums seemed to be less competitive but it was less hassle to stick with them and so we did. Last year, however, my father suffered a brain haemorrhage forcing us to cancel a holiday. Despite the surgeon’s assurance that his stroke had been caused by a congenital weakness in a blood vessel, Options decided to take the view that it had been caused by elevated blood pressure and since they felt that I should have declared the fact my father had been on medication for many years to control his blood pressure, they would not pay up.

I have since discovered that the Financial Ombudsman has ruled that travellers cannot reasonably be expected to know what medication their parents are on but at the time, with my father gravely ill, it was all too much to pursue. Needless to say we will not be renewing our policy this year.
