For a company that presumably targets a young clientele, their website is a bit of a let-down. It does looks like it was last upgraded in the 20th century! It is, however, easy to navigate and contains a wealth of information and advice about independent travelling. Their FAQ section covers most questions one might have and their Read This section is refreshingly honest about the level of cover they provide for each policy and, more importantly, about what they do not cover. For instance, unlike some other travel insurance providers, they will cover people with medical conditions such as asthma or diabetes, provided they are stable. Their Gold and Diamond policies cover most hazardous pursuits, such as paragliding or rafting, provided they are not the main object of your trip.
With their online quote system, I was able to get a reasonable quote for my backpacking trip to South America in a matter of minutes and was dealt with diligently when I called. They are rather flexible and able to tailor a policy to your particular needs, especially if you intend to travel for more than 45 days, as a couple or a family.
Their office is open till 8pm on weekdays and 4pm on Saturdays. On the phone, they are not pushy at all and very helpful, showing genuine interest in your travel plans. Most of their staff is obviously made up of seasoned travellers who know most of the spots on the backpacker trail. They are happy to share their experiences and to provide guidance about the many pitfalls of independent travelling.
There are some age restrictions to most policies, which actually ensure they can offer competitive rates. Navigator’s Gold and Diamond policies are underwritten by Lloyds of London while their Silver Policies are underwritten by Elvia.
Even though they might not be the cheapest, I think Navigator Travel Insurance is a great travel insurance provider for backpackers, independent travellers and gap-year students. I would definitely recommend Navigator because they treat you as an individual and are very straightforward and honest about their policies.
