Statistically speaking, travellers over the age of 65 are a poor risk for insurance companies and this goes some way to explaining why elderly relations of mine have found it so hard to get cover for a trip they are planning to take this winter.

The husband has been having ongoing treatment for a serious condition and although things are looking good he would not be prepared to travel with this as an exclusion which was the solution offered by several companies. Neither is he prepared to sit at home all winter, having had to cancel his summer holiday.

It was therefore with interest that I read about Insureforall on the internet. They provide cover for all over 65s regardless of age – another problem with some companies which put an upper age limit which can be as low as 70. As the website says, they may not be able to offer cover for skydiving or swimming with sharks but that certainly will not be a problem for this elderly couple! They do, however, offer winter sports cover in Europe for those up to 79, which may be of interest to some of the many fit and adventurous senior citizens that I have come across on my travels.

My relative will have to speak to someone to give more details of his condition and cover will probably not be cheap but preliminary explorations have put his mind at ease so things are looking good for the rest and recuperation which he so deserves.

Don't bother using the Insure For All website, it does not work correctly (June 2010).

A call to their 'customer service' on 12th June was met with a voicemail. We left a message and a contact telephone number. We also confirmed the nature of the problem by sending an e-mail to them on the same day.

Two days later and still no response from them, we contacted their office by telephone. This time we spoke to a live, but somewhat confused sounding gentleman from outside of the UK, who suggested that we contact the sales department!

In view of our experience we cast a doubt upon the ability of this company in responding to a complaint, particularly in this market sector.
