I booked travel insurance in 2008 with Columbus Direct, the cover that I paid for was for 1 year's cover, I got an email from them a few days ago 27.08.12 saying thank you for choosing Columbus Direct, when I rang them they told me that they had continued to renew the travel insurance for the last 4 years even though I didn't agree to this !!!! They said because I had not called them to cancel it that they automatically renewed this and continued to take money from the card that I originally booked this with online, I asked them why they did not send any letter or call me to ask me if I wanted to renew and they said that they emailed me which I checked and I didn't have any of the emails. When I asked to speak to the manager Edward came on the phone listened to my query and told me he would put me on hold to speak to his manager about getting a refund, after 10 min on hold I was transferred to an agent and was told that Edward the manager had left the office due to a bank holiday and told the agent what to say. I demanded to talk to another manager and I spoke to Michelle, she had opened a formal complaint for me and advised me that I will not get a full refund !!! Beware do not use this company !!!!!!!!

Columbus Direct is terrible. Claimed for lost luggage (Christmas 2009) - basically Columbus just stalled and stalled until I just gave up and obviously DID NOT renew the policy. They claim they'll stump up £75, but it just won't happen. As much use as a chocolate teapot - in fact less so - at least you can eat a chocolate teapot. Do not waste your money - you will be better off with no insurance - at least if something bad happens, you won't waste hours on the phone/typing emails/typing and posting letters.

PS. Why do people write reviews of insurance companies if they haven't claimed? I have read so many saying such and such a company... is great! They gave me the BEST quote! Excellent... and no claim. You can't judge insurance until you've actually USED IT! Like buying a cup of coffee and saying it's fantastic... without actually drinking it!

Oh yes, and is anyone taken in by Liz Stratford's review? Hmmmm....surely she's not a COLUMBUS EMPLOYEE? No..... that's DEFINITELY a legitimate review. Yes, that's it. Right.

I stumbled across a link for Columbus Travel Insurance on the website I used to book a one week summer holiday to Menorca with my sister. We ultimately decided to take out our travel insurance with Columbus because, at less than £20 for both of us, it was the cheapest deal we could find. We were also able to sort out our policy online and receive confirmation by e-mail, avoiding the hassle of phone calls or lengthy queues at a travel agent or the Post Office.

A number of packages are available: single trip insurance, annual travel insurance or backpackers insurance. Columbus offers a wide range of policies in each category, all covering essentials such as medical expenses, personal accident cover and personal liability. There is also the option of extending basic coverage to include important extras such as cancellation of the holiday and travel delays, as well as adventurous sports not covered by a basic policy. The website is well designed and the coverage offered by each policy is displayed very clearly, so selecting the policy which best suits your particular requirements is simple.

Fortunately, my sister and I had no need to put our insurance to the ultimate test by making a claim during or after our holiday, but we were impressed by the very competitive price and how hassle free the booking process was. I would recommend Columbus to anyone seeking cheap, flexible travel insurance.
