Essential Travel says customers must wear ski helmets

Skiing can be a risky activity, and accidents on the slopes are common. For this reason a comprehensive winter sports travel insurance policy is absolutely essential for anyone who plans to travel abroad to go skiing.

One of the most important safety measures that skiers should take is to wear a helmet. Now Essential Travel, one of the leading providers of travel insurance, has announced that anyone purchasing winter sports cover from the company will have to wear their helmets on the slopes if they want to stay fully covered, making it the first travel insurance provider to stipulate this requirement.

The decision was made after Essential Travel carried out a survey into the safety habits of skiers. From the results, it found out that 77% of skiers and snowboarders wear helmets, which is an increase of 15% over the last two years.

The research also found that of the people who use a helmet, 73% said that they thought they should be able to pay lower premiums.

Following the research, Essential Travel decided that it would make wearing a helmet compulsory for all skiers if they wanted to take out insurance with the provider. Stuart Bensusan, from Essential Travel, said that although a helmet “does not reduce all sports injury”, it does reduce the risk of injuries that can be potential fatal. From now on, any skiers who decide not to wear a helmet could invalidate their policies.

As a result, the mandatory helmet use means that the insurers can now reduce premiums on winter sports insurance by 15%, which is a suitable reward for skiers who are taking active steps to stay safer on the slopes.
