New travel insurance guide from ABI

Choosing the right travel insurance policy can be a bit of a nightmare for consumers, especially if it is the first time that they have made an insurance purchase. It’s for this reason that the ABI (Association of British Insurers) has released a new guide to help holidaymakers planning their summer holidays to choose the most suitable travel insurance.

Many people simply don’t know what they should be looking for or why some insurance policies may be more suitable than others, and the ABI wants to remedy this.

One of the things that it highlights in the guide is that cheap policies might not always be the best option. With the growth in popularity of comparison websites, many people now look for their insurance based on price alone. However, shopping for insurance by the price of the premium could lead you to purchase insurance which does not have the level of cover you need.

Another point that is made in the guide is the need to disclose all medical conditions to the insurer. If you don’t disclose any pre-existing medical conditions then you may find your insurance is invalid when it comes to making a claim. If in doubt, always check with the insurance provider to see if you can still get cover, or look into a specialist pre-existing medical conditions policy if you need to.

The ABI also recommends staying safe when you go abroad by not doing anything that you would not do back home. It also makes it clear that any claims which are made as a result of use of drugs or alcohol may be invalid, so care should always be taken.
