Insurance will cover travellers for Swine Flu

The ABI (Association of British Insurers) has just issued a statement to reassure travellers who are worried about what their insurance policies will cover them for should they become ill with swine flu whilst abroad. It has announced that, as long as the traveller did not have the illness before leaving the UK, they should definitely be covered.

We’re always hearing about people getting into trouble because they did not realise that they were not covered by their insurance for a particular sport or event when they were on holiday. And with the hysteria surrounding swine flu over the past few months, it was about time some more information was released to calm a few nerves.

On top of individuals being covered, the ABI also said that even if only one person in a group becomes ill the cancellation cover should apply to the whole group. This will be a relief to families going on holiday this summer who may have been concerned as to what exactly they were covered for.

However, there is one instance when travellers will not be covered upon catching swine flu. If you go to a country that the government or WHO (the World Health Organisation) has recommended against travelling to, then you could see your cover invalidated. If you absolutely have to go to one of these countries then, to avoid any problems, it is always best to ask your insurer before you go about what will happen should you become ill.
