Holidaymakers warned of insurance scam
2 commentsThe insurance company, EssentialTravel.co.uk, has issued a warning to Brits who may have become victims of a worrying travel insurance scam. EssentialTravel.co.uk issued the warning to all individuals who took out a policy between the beginning of April 2004 and the November 20th 2005.
If British holidaymakers who took out such a policy have received a letter from Blue Swan Travel, they should exercise extreme caution before complying with the demands of the letter’s contents to provide money to the company. During the period mentioned above, numerous travel operators provided policies to consumers, which were underwritten by Blue Swan Insurance Jersey Ltd.
However, whilst this brought no problems at the time, Blue Swan Travel has subsequently gone into receivership, which means that the policies it had previously underwritten became invalid straight away. It has recently been discovered that a bogus claims company was set up, which traded under the Blue Swan Travel name. This company has since written to consumers requesting money.
EssentialTravel.co.uk has revealed its anxiety over this situation, especially since many of the consumers being affected seem to be “vulnerable pensioners”. Furthermore, a spokesman has said, “in some cases we understand that the sums being requested are in excess of ten thousand pounds”.
The advice remains that consumers should seek advice before taking action of any kind if they receive a letter from Blue Swan Travel. Consumers can contact EssentialTravel.co.uk directly or can contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. This helpline is run by Trading Standards and will be able to advise on the correct course of action to take.
